"Work is love made visible." Kahlil Gibran

Karin is one of the Valley's most well loved and respected yoga teachers. Her vision to create an urban style yoga studio that was affordable for everyone, where yogis of all backgrounds and levels practice can practice and heal together, became a reality in 2012.

Her passion to serve others continues on a daily basis as she guides and inspires her students, teaching over eleven classes each week. Her radiant authentic style, whole hearted approach to life, along with her ability to connect with her students keeps them coming back for more. Karin's classes balance the meditative, energetic and spiritual side of yoga and life along with anatomical alignment and strength building.

Born in Greenfield Massachusetts, her family moved to the beautiful Arizona desert in 1961. Pretty much a Native Arizonan and local yogi, she grew up right here in Scottsdale. She graduated from Supai Elementary school, Coronado High School and Scottsdale Community College. She met her husband Roy and best friend of thirty seven years, while attending SCC on an athletic scholarship. They have two grown children and two beautiful grandchildren.

Karin was born and raised Catholic and began her meditation practice as a child by reciting morning and evening prayers. Her mother and grandmothers shared their deep devotional practice to pray the rosary with Karin and this early religious training became the foundation of a deeper spiritual practice of meditation that she has been cultivating over the past fifty years.

She began her yoga practice in 2000 at the Yoga Institute in Scottsdale Arizona. Her practice became a way for her to manage the stress of her corporate career. Her practice allowed her to see it was time to adventure out and she resigned from her corporate job to become a yoga teacher; walking away from everything she thought defined her. Through her practice she had a new understanding, that she defined herself.

Since that time she has taught over 11000 yoga classes.

LINEAGE MATTERS

Karin is honored to have studied directly under the "Founder of Hot Yoga", Bikram Choudhury, Indian born American Yogi. Of the various forms of yoga available today, it has the most direct roots to the physical culture and yoga therapy movements of early-mid 20th century Calcutta, India.

Bikram Choudhury, studied under Bishnu Ghosh, the younger brother of Paramahansa Yogananda (author of "Autobiography of a Yogi") and founder of the "Self Realization Fellowship" in Los Angeles. Ghosh was a celebrated physical culturist and the first to scientifically document Yoga's ability to heal the body. Karin is grateful for this direct line of lineage to Hot Yoga and the link to Self Realization with Paramahansa Yogananda.

She has incorporated other lineages into her teachings from her time studying with Gurudev Amrit Desai, one of the few remaining living Gurus and one of the earliest pioneers of yoga in the West. His teacher was Swami Kripalu. Amrit Desai founded the Kripalu Center and Amrit Yoga, Karin studied directly under GuruDev and his daughter Kamini Desai during her Yoga Nidra and Master Yoga Nidra facilitator trainings.

She is also grateful for the teachings of Yogi Bhajan also an Indian born American Yogi who introduced Kundalini yoga to the West. In 2018 she studied under teachers who knew, studied and worked with him.

Karin & Bikram Choudhury

In 2004, Karin resigned from her corporate job, packed her bags and headed to Bikram's Yoga College of India Teacher Training. It was a great adventure and the first time in her life that she had gone on a trip by herself. Over the 9 weeks she took 117 yoga classes, memorized "The Dialogue" and met some amazing souls. This training was the gateway for her life as a yoga teacher and she will always be grateful for the experience.

Karin is registered E-RYT 500 with Yoga Alliance.

October 2014 ~ 100-hour Amrit Method, Yoga Nidra training with Kamini Desai Ph.D.

This training was extremely self-healing for Karin and she is grateful to share this ancient form of sleep based meditation and offer it on a regular basis at HYU.

Karin and Gurudev Amrit Desai at his Ashram in the Ocala National Forrest, Salt Springs Florida

Being drawn deeper into the Spiritual and conscious awareness aspect of yoga through her devotion to her own yoga nidra practice, Karin traveled to Salt Springs Florida for a 10-day Advanced Masters Yoga Nidra Training. Living at the Ashram and studying directly under Gurudev Amrit Desai, was very transformational, as she found restoration, mind, body and spirit. The 240 total hours spent at the Ashram deepened her connection to God and the 51 curriculum hours, deepened her understanding of yoga nidra and yoga.

Details of training:

Instruction and practice of Advanced Yoga Nidra techniques

Emotional integration

Yoga Nidra for children

Energetic Anatomy

Scriptural study

The greatest gift was the time spent in stillness at the Ashram and the serenely beautiful surroundings that allowed the reaffirmation of her life path to serve others. Karin knows that beyond the surface of this physical world, there is a divine plan at work in her life and it has guided her to this very moment.

"When, through the practice of yoga, the mind ceases its restless movements and becomes still, the aspirant realizes the Atman."

March 2019 Functional Approach to Yoga Weekend Intensive with Paul Grilley

Paul karin.jpg

This wonderful weekend intensive reaffirmed our teaching style at HYU and our functional approach to yoga poses. We loved working in awareness to the experience about letting go of the “Perfect Pose” that many teachers strive to get students into. The ultimate limit to every range of motion in yoga is our bones and every body is unique. Everyone has a different range of motion in every pose, so a much better way to approach teaching poses is to adapt a yoga pose to the unique bones and body of each individual. This fundamental insight has helped to change the way asana is taught.

March 2019 Level 1 and Level 11 Blessing Code Sacred Numerology Training with Sangeet Kaur Khalsa

IMG_4349.jpg

This training was eye opening and a rare view into what our soul chose for us in this life-time. The gifts, blessings and even the challenges and how to use them to our advantage.

This numerology system built on profound discoveries by yogis centuries ago who understood the life-course blueprint embedded in our energy fields. Yogi Bhajan in the early days shared the basics of this ancient understanding and how a birth-date can unlock the code of a person's soul choices in this lifetime.

Master Numerologist Sangeet Kaur Khalsa who for nearly thirty years studied and worked closely with Yogi Bhajan, expanded and modernized this system. We learned how to use these insights to better understand our current situation, how we arrived at where we are in life, and how we can plan and prepare for our future - our karma and our destiny.

If you are curious about learning more about your Souls Code, please contact Raddha Sangeeta Kaur ( Karin Fellman)
